It’s been almost fifteen years since I first tasted the sublime and sophisticated wines of Almeida/Bucaco hotel and whenever they become available (maybe every few years), I leap on the chance to load up. They are coastal Portugal’s answer to the long-lived, spellbinding wines of Lopez de Heredia and especially with the White and Rose, will shatter your expectations.
Carefully made from the best vineyards, raised with traditional and highly particular methods, built to age, and generally reserved just for visitors to the luxury hotel, they are wines of joyous flavor and complexity. I offer them here as a 3-pack sampler but I am certain that some of you who have bought from me before will want more than that.
The Bucaco Hotel was founded in 1917, with the highest of society as its clientele. In order to have the very best to offer his guests, founder Alexandre de Almeida sought to make the greatest expression of Portuguese wine he could. Utilizing grapes from what he viewed to be the country's two greatest regions, the Dão and Bairrada, the Bucaco wines are still produced today in the same methods and with the same spectacular results. This Branco Reservado is a blend of Encruzado, Maria Gomes and Bical, and is fabulously focused, driven and aromatic, with a backbone of textured acidity that'll allow it to age for many years.
