Wine Explorer's Club - Legendary 2013 Barolo Duo - Cappellano and Burlotto Monvigliero
My two favorite Piedmont producers. I wish I could see the look on your face when you try these wines. Holy shit are they ever amazing.
The Burlotto Monvigliero is a wine of a legend and one of my personal desert island wines.

Burlotto’s 2013 Barolo Monvigliero is a wine I like to serve at dinners like this one, as I know most people may never taste it, which is a shame. Of course, the 2013 is young, but its profound greatness is evident in the early going, The interplay of aromatics, fruit and structure really brings out the stunning beauty of the Monvigliero cru. The 2013 is simply a phenomenal wine and a towering achievement from Fabio Alessandria. (AG)

Decanted 5.5 hours before serving for 90 minutes and then returned to the clean bottle (there was substantial sediment removed). Second time with this wine - last time was 14 months ago. This time consumed from Zalto Burg stem whereas last time was Riedel Burg (more on this later). The wine today has a soaring spicy and floral nose. On the palate black cherry cough drop, dried Italian herbs, baking spice, underbrush, rusty iron, leather, and a wee bit of tar. The structural elements seem youthful with strong tannin and acids; however, the flavours have moved to a more secondary stage. Interesting combo. Noting how much better this bottle was than the last one, I wondered how much of this was the different glass. So I poured some from my Zalto into a Riedel Burg stem. Immediately, the nose was tamped down and the profile of the wine became narrower and more acidic. Remarkable difference - the Zalto truly let this wine sing. Many years to go yet for this wine, but delicious now from the Zalto.
