2015 Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino
2015 Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino
93pts Vinous: The 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino opens slowly in the glass, as dusty red florals and crushed stone evolve into sour cherry and hints of blood orange. This is like pure juice on the palate, yet with the depth and intensity of Sagrantino. Masses of ripe wild berries and depths of minerality form under an air of purple-tinged florals. A resonance of chalk dust and pretty rose lingers, while the 2015 finishes lightly structured and with a hint of hard candies that lingers on and on.
100% Sagrantino. From biodynamically farmed, hand-harvested estate fruit. The younger vines of about 15 years old go into this traditional Sagrantino (the oldest vines go into the Fracaton bottling). Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, a bare touch of sulfur and no temperature control in vat. The maceration is around 30 days. The wine is aged for a minimum of 5 years in old Slavonian oak botti. It is bottled without fining, filtering or additional sulfur. 2015 is still the current release as of summer 2022
