Endless River Gruner Veltliner, Paragon, Edna Valley, 2018
I Just Want an Ocean
Fragrant, delicious and a little bit meditative, Endless River is our attempt to tell the story of our upbringings in California, France and Italy. Wine works on our memory with a sort of magic. It can connect us to our memories, but also to those of people and cultures we've never experienced directly. After a good bottle of wine, some of their memories become ours, joining an endless river that carries us both forward and backward in our lives.
The Gruner Veltliner from Paragon Vineyard sits on a west-facing slope not far from the Pacific Ocean, and it typically expresses some of the more exciting herbal and floral elements of the Austrian original. 2018 was a cool, late harvest, letting us take our time in dialing in flavor and acidity at generous levels while retaining low alcohol. This wine never disappoints us, abundant with apple and pear fruit flavors, a hint of lychee and jalapeno chile - and finishes with a broad, savory, mineral intensity.
